Ingredients

Scale

For the Hot Dogs:

  • 4 premium-quality hot dogs (beef, pork, chicken, or plant-based)
  • 4 hot dog buns (toasted if desired)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter (for grilling)

For the Toppings:

  • ½ cup BBQ sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced and caramelized
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar or smoked gouda cheese
  • Fresh cilantro or parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Optional Add-ons:

  • Pickles or relish
  • Jalapeños (for heat)
  • Coleslaw (for crunch)

Instructions

Prepare the Caramelized Onions:

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and caramelized. Set aside.

Grill the Hot Dogs:
2. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Lightly brush the hot dogs with olive oil or butter to prevent sticking.
3. Grill the hot dogs for 4-5 minutes, turning occasionally, until they’re heated through and have nice grill marks.

Toast the Buns (Optional):
4. Place the buns cut-side down on the grill for 1-2 minutes until lightly toasted. This adds texture and prevents sogginess.

Assemble the Hot Dogs:
5. Spread a generous layer of BBQ sauce on the bottom half of each bun. Place a grilled hot dog on top.
6. Add a spoonful of caramelized onions and sprinkle shredded cheese over the hot dogs. If desired, place the assembled hot dogs back on the grill (covered) for 1-2 minutes to melt the cheese.

Serve and Enjoy:
7. Garnish with fresh cilantro or parsley and serve with optional toppings like pickles, jalapeños, or coleslaw. Pair with chips, potato salad, or grilled veggies for a complete summer meal.
